It is the largest and busiest airport in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is approximately from Visakhapatnam and operates as a civil enclave on an Indian Navy airfield named INS DEGA. The original runway was long and a new -long and -wide runway was inaugurated on 15 June 2007 to accommodate medium-sized and wide body aircraft. With the installation and calibration of the instrument landing system, the airport got night landing facilities in July 2007, with the inaugural flight of Dornier operated by Indian Navy. The night landing facility became operational from 30 March 2008 for commercial airlines.
